HISTORY OF WEDDING CAKES

The origin of the wedding cake dates back to ancient Rome. At the end of the wedding, the groom would break a loaf of barley bread over the bride’s head for good luck and fertility. They would share a few crumbs and then guests would scramble to pick up the rest in order to take home some of that good luck. This tradition has morphed over time from bread towers to savory wedding pies, and eventually to wedding cakes! There are all sorts of traditions and superstitions related to wedding pastry but we love the ritual of the couple cutting the cake together as their first official married act.

Q & A WITH LESLIE MAYNOR-ANDERSON

Years in Business:
49

Tell us about your business and what you offer:
Fantasy Frostings was opened in 1971 by my mother, Joyce Maynor. We have maintained all these years as a family owned and operated company with our third generation currently working as our cake decorator and sugar artist.

We began as a custom cake design company that has evolved with the wedding industry through the years to create products in demand, such as custom dessert bars, and currently adding to those offerings our perfectly packaged events that work great for curbside celebrations, micro weddings, and elopements.

We also have a retail bakery offering cupcakes, cakes, cookies, dessert cups, and cakelettes!!

What sets you apart from other vendors in your industry?
My brand is built on taste, and quality. At the end of the day, what you serve your family and guests for any event should be the best tasting cake or dessert possible. We focus on creating unique flavor combinations, with superior quality ingredients. Then we make it pretty!!

What do you love most about working in the wedding/event industry?
My favorite part of working in this industry is the relationship I get to build with the bride and groom. I have had the opportunity to develop  lifelong relationships with families, creating something for every special event in their life and their children's. Last year alone I was able to be part of 22 weddings for families that were second generations of weddings for us. My clients mean the world to me and I am so thankful that I spend every day celebrating milestones in people's lives so sweetly!!

Tell us about a favorite event-related story or adventure:
I have had so many fun adventures during my career. My most memorable was creating an edible White House for President Reagan when he had just been elected and they celebrated while at the Annenberg Estate for the annual New Year's Eve soiree in Rancho Mirage. Meeting the President and First Lady, being a part of such a socialite event in 1980, to watch the Hollywood royalty arrive, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Stewart, Alfred and Betsy Bloomingdale, Malcom Forbes, and Bob Hope all there gushing over the cake we had created. So much fun to be a part of.

What current wedding/event trend do you like the most?
That the wedding today is representative of the "couple" and their story!! So many weddings of the past seemed so cookie cutter, and what the parents wanted. The wedding today is all about celebrating the uniqueness of each couple, pushing the boundaries of what people think is appropriate. Celebrating love is just a pleasure to be a part of.
