Evolution of Wedding Photography

Wedding photography dates back to the mid 1800s. It is said that Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were the first couple to have a wedding picture taken. This precedent aided in the tradition to follow. For many years, the technology of photography remained bulky, slow, and expensive. Because of the price, wedding pictures were limited to the wealthy and restricted to studio settings. WWII brought the advent of the portable camera and the world of wedding photography changed forever. Advances in photographic technology from film to digital changed the game again. And that brings us to the myriad of styles and edits seen today!

Q & A WITH CHRISTY KENDALL

Years in Business:
12

Describe your signature style in one sentence:
Authentic.

What sets you apart from other vendors in your industry?
My turnaround time is half of other photography companies at just two weeks and my overall attention to detail tends to really come in handy when we are talking about times to shoot, etc.

What do you love most about working in the wedding/event industry?
I love that this is an area of photography that allows me to work with the same people again and again. I tend to shoot someone's engagement, then their wedding and then we see each other again as they start a family and yearly for Christmas cards - its so wonderful to watch families grow and get to see it all happen over the years.

Tell us about a favorite event-related story or adventure:
Two years ago I shot a wedding in a torrential downpour - I held my camera in one hand and an umbrella in another and got some of the most joyous images. During their outdoor ceremony water rushed down the stairs as the bride came towards the altar and when we left to shoot their portraits we walked up a hill that could have been marketed as a slip & slide! They had a blast dancing and running in the rain and took it as good luck that it poured down on their big day.

Three things people probably don't know about your business or team:
1) We are a zero waste company and use no single use plastics or disposables. 2) We have been published well over twenty times in just the last few years. 3) We have worked with every race through the years and work hard to showcase interracial and same sex couples in our work and portfolio.

Do you have a favorite, must-capture moment at every wedding?
When the groom sees the bride walking down the isle - those tears are priceless <3

What current wedding/event trend do you like the most?
I've really enjoyed the way altars have changed so much the last few years – I've seen such cool shapes and designs and it really livens up the ceremony space visually.

What piece of advice would you give couples to ensure that they get wedding photos they love forever?
A good photographer will be able to tell you the best time to do an outdoor versus indoor ceremony, as well as your family shots and couples shots. I have an entire PDF I give to clients to ensure their group shots are fast and easy and how they can gauge the best shoot times. For example, you'd want an indoor ceremony to be earlier in the day so more light is coming through the windows and you get a great soft look. For an outdoor ceremony you'd want to either be shaded earlier in the day to get softer light or an hour and a half before sunset if there is no shade.
